Koyasan, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. Koyasan was founded in 826 by the monk Kobo Daishi. Today, the temple complex on Mt. Koya is the center of Shingon Buddhism, one of Japan’s most prominent Buddhist sects, and is an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists. Numerous temples in the town offer food and lodging. Visitors can also join the morning prayer ceremonies, which typically include the Goma Fire Ritual where consecration prayers are offered for individuals and all sentient beings.
